The inclusive magic of Toms River’s Field of Dreams
The RWJBH Field of Dreams, in Toms River, N.J., is more than a playground—it’s a groundbreaking example of modern design, engineering, and community spirit. I recently toured the facility with co-founder Christian Kane and dedicated volunteer Sue Coan, witnessing the impact of this exceptional space firsthand.
A Personal Mission
The Field of Dreams was conceived by Mary and Christian Kane in 2017, inspired by their experience as parents of a child with special needs. After a 2012 car accident left their son Gavin with a traumatic brain injury, the Kanes struggled to find recreational spaces where Gavin could play alongside his siblings. This challenge fueled their vision to create a place where all children, regardless of ability, could play together. After half a decade of determined fundraising, they secured $3.6 million to bring their vision to life—and they’re not stopping there!
State-Of-The-Art Play
The facility goes far beyond traditional play areas, featuring a basketball court with adjustable rims, a bocce court, a thrive station, and a walking path adorned with designs by local artists. Accessibility is at the heart of the design. There are eight bathrooms, including special-needs stalls, a Snack Shack, wheelchair-charging stations, and a covered pavilion to ensure all visitors are comfortable and accommodated.
But that’s not all—there are several additional amenities that make the Field of Dreams a true community hub. A nine-hole, miniature-golf course, five community gardens, and an adaptive baseball field cater to a wide range of interests and abilities. The enclosed hydroponic garden, tended by adults with special needs, houses 200 tilapia fish and three types of lettuce, and supports food donations made to local families in need. Also, the Quiet Area is a calming sensory space designed to support unique needs and provide a place for reflection.
One of the facility’s most original features is the gigantic galactic playground, which boasts Gavin’s Galaxy, an outer space-themed area named after the Kanes’ son. At the center of Gavin’s Galaxy is an expansive planetary mountain ramp that is fully wheelchair-accessible, leading to a trampoline that’s also designed for wheelchair access. This innovative design allows children of all abilities to experience the joy of bouncing, making Gavin’s Galaxy a shining example of how imagination and accessibility can work together.
Major Attraction
The Field of Dreams has quickly become a beloved destination for special-needs families across the tri-state area. Since its grand opening in April 2022, thousands of families have registered to use the playground. While entrance is free, registration is required to ensure the playground remains a safe and welcoming space for those who need it most.
Beyond its physical features, the Field of Dreams is a beacon of hope and inclusion. It’s a place where barriers are dismantled and children of all abilities can play, laugh, and grow together. With its thoughtful design, state-of-the-art facilities, and unwavering commitment to accessibility, the Field of Dreams sets a new standard for playgrounds. Interested families can participate in a variety of camps, events, and activities hosted on-site throughout the year.
