Proper planning pays dividends in running programs smoothly
Planning is the cornerstone of any well-run camp. However, the beauty of plans is they are open to customizing as to how to operate a camp. Below are some tips and guidelines for a successful program:
- Scheduling: Schedule program dates at least a year in advance. For those directors who operate a summer camp, this is easy to determine because dates are typically dictated by the local school district. For directors coordinating programs year-round, have a solid programming plan in place. Once the schedule is set for the year, communicate it! Create marketing materials, post information on the website, and send emails. Include the phrase “dates and times subject to change” on all communication in case of unforeseen events.
- Activities: Plan activities, including any themes, prior to the start of camp. Not every detail of every activity needs to be planned, but core activities, crafts, and games should be pre-planned each week. Relying on counselors to constantly come up with activities on the fly results in too much repetition, down time, and lack of creativity.
